Graduate Recruitment (back to top)
Our career and employment services enable employers to recruit final year students for graduate positions to commence on completion of their studies, or penultimate year students for summer internships and practical work experience during vacations. Graduate programmes are a great way of providing students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop their skills. It also allows you to train the graduate in your company policies, procedures and develop their skills to fit with your company.
Career Fair
Career Fairs provide an excellent opportunity to meet prospective employees for your graduate programs. USQ operates two types of Career Fairs – a traditional on-campus Career Fair and internet based e-Career Fair.
On-Campus Graduate Employment Career Fair
The traditional on-campus Career Fair always attracts worthy candidates for graduate programs. You have an opportunity to talk to students and join with other employers who present their organisations in a busy market atmosphere.
Online Graduate Employment e-Career Fair
This efficient method of promoting your graduate programs enables you to reach thousands of distance USQ students instantly. The Graduate Employment e-Career Fair offers incredible distribution at minimal cost, running for one month.
In brief, the costs are as follows:
Option 1: Graduate Recruitment Career Fair only - $440.00 inc.GST
Option 2: Graduate Recruitment e-Career Fair only - $330.00 inc.GST
Option 3: Both Fairs - $385.00 inc.GST (for both)
You are welcome to contact our Graduate Recruitment Officer, Katrina Vagg on 07 4631 1823 to discuss Graduate Employment further.
Company recruitment material (back to top)
Brochures or information handouts are an extremely effective way of informing students about the opportunities available to them as graduates within your organisation. The Careers and Employment Service maintains a Career Library of resources for students to research study, career and work options. Organisations are invited to submit information regarding career opportunities available for students and graduates. Include your company website when you register as we encourage students to use the Internet to research company and job information. Employers seeking on-line applications should include the specific website for their graduate recruitment.
Please ensure we receive posters 2-3 weeks in advance of your earliest recruitment date. Please contact Katrina Downes for appropriate numbers.
The USQ Careers, Employment & Welfare Service at the University of Southern Queensland offers a direct mail and email facility to enable quick and efficient contact with students regarding Graduate Employment or related topics. The details you provide will also be listed free of charge on CareerHub, our internet job search service.
Posters and Brochures
We distribute posters and promotional material campus-wide, including university departments, lecture blocks and libraries, so Careers and Employment are the only point of contact you need to achieve maximum coverage. The most effective posters are bold and brief and, ideally, should include:
- A bold, clear heading indicating all your preferred subject majors
- Your company name and a brief explanation of your activities
- Information Session date, time and venue (if applicable)
- Application procedure and closing date
- Your website.
Email
An email to specific course groups is probably the quickest, simplest and most economical method of publicising your graduate recruitment. To avoid complications when forwarding to students, your message should be text-only within the body of the original email.
Emails from employers to course groups are sent using the university student email address system to all students enrolled in a specified course. To utilise this service you need to provide a 200 word (approx.) statement regarding the employment opportunity, including a detailed job description, application and contact details. Attachments are not permitted. Your email text will be forwarded from the University and recipients will be directed to your organisation and your entry in CareerHub. At the end of the text a disclaimer must be included stating the Careers and Employment Service has organised the mail-out on the organisation's behalf, and has not made the student names and addresses available to the organisation. (See example disclaimer below). The cost for the email service is a $110 (inc.GST) flat rate administration fee.
Direct mail-out
A direct mail-out service to specific course groups of students is also available. Material to be mailed should be pre-packed by the organisation in sealed envelopes. We requires one week's notice to gather student details enrolled in specific courses and produce student address labels, so please contact us well ahead of your mail-out date. We will notify you of the number of students involved so that you can prepare the envelopes and enclosed information. All organisations should include an acknowledgment in their material that the USQ Careers and Employment Service has organised the mail-out on the organisation's behalf, and has not made the student names and addresses available to the organisation. (See example disclaimer below). Charges for the surface mail service are postage of $2.20 per business size envelope and $2.75 per A4 size envelope (GST inclusive).
Disclaimer
The following disclaimer is an example of that which must be included in all emails and mail-outs:
"This information has been sent to you on our behalf by the University of Southern Queensland Careers and Employment Service. Student details have not been disclosed to us."
If you would like to proceed with either of these services contact Katrina Vagg on 07 4631 1823.
On-Campus Employer Presentations (back to top)
An on-campus Information Session (presentation) raises the profile of your organisation and ensures that students are well informed about your particular recruitment needs. Ideally, this should be held 2-3 weeks before your closing date for applications. We can arrange group meetings between students and your representative/s and book individual interviews with selected students. We will also provide lunch with senior academic staff, giving you the opportunity to talk to the people who teach tomorrow's leaders. Visits to campus contribute favourably to an organisation's profile amongst graduates and can have tangible benefits that extend beyond immediate recruitment. Wednesday lunch between 12-2pm are often our best time to hold presentation as this is our common hour and no lectures are scheduled.
To book your Information Session, log in to CareerHub and click on "Add an Event".
If you arrange your own Information Session off-campus, please ensure you notify us of the details so we can include them on our website.
There are excellent audio-visual services available on campus. Just specify the type of equipment required on the "Events" booking form eg, video/data projector; PowerPoint datashow (own laptop). Overhead projectors and computer projectors are standard equipment in all lecture theatres and do not need to be booked.
Applications From Students (back to top)
It is important to give students clear instructions in your recruitment and publicity material indicating what your target subject areas are and the procedure for applying to your organisation.
It is also important to adhere to arrangements confirmed with the Careers and Employment, in particular your advertised closing date.
Indicate what you require from applicants submitting written applications eg, CV, application form, covering letter, copy of academic transcript, referees, references etc.
Campus Interviews (back to top)
Many employers find it useful and convenient to conduct their preliminary interviews on campus. Because the university is located away from the city centre, it is obviously more convenient for students also, meaning less time away from lectures. We can assist you by providing interview rooms and scheduling interviews.
We advise booking interview rooms as early as possible as there is heavy demand during some periods. Let us know if there will be more than one person interviewing so we can ensure you have a suitably sized room.
